They both lived in the village of Soham in Cambridgeshire, where they went to St Andrew's Primary School.
They went missing on Sunday 4 August 2002, when they were both 10 years old.
The girls were big David Beckham fans and were wearing matching red Manchester United tops with his name on when they disappeared. David Beckham even made a public appeal for the girls to come home.
Both the girls were friendly and popular, and Holly particularly loved music, and Jessica loved to swim.
There was a huge hunt for them all around Soham, led by the police and helped by hundreds of their friends and neighbours. Sadly, their bodies were found two weeks later on 17 August.

Classification of pedophile activism as a valid political or civil rights activist movement is itself controversial.
Law enforcement officials and psychologists have asserted that the movement’s online support groups enable pedophiles to justify engaging in adult-child sexual contact. They claim that adults arrested for child molestation frequently cite the positions of the movement as justification for their actions. (Finkelhor, 1984) [2], [3], [4] [5] Psychologists consider some of the positions of the movement to be the "cognitive distortions" characteristic of sexual abusers. [6]
For example, in August 2006, The New York Times published the results of a four-month investigation of online pedophile communications and activities. [7] The newspaper described how "pedophiles view themselves as the vanguard of a nascent movement seeking legalization of child pornography and the loosening of age-of-consent laws." And while "pedophiles often maintain that the discussion sites are little more than support groups," the newspaper found that, "[r]epeatedly in these conversations, pedophiles said the discussions had helped them accept their attractions and had even allowed them to have sex with a child without guilt."
The movement’s members have vehemently opposed these characterizations. As described below, two debates surround the movement: whether there is such a thing as harmless child-adult sexual contact, and whether the advocating of such views spills over into encouraging such contact.

According to Herdt, an anthropologist who has studied sex between adults and children in other cultures, pedophile advocates need to replace "dull and reductionistic" terms like pedophilia and abuse when discussing sex between "a person who has not achieved adulthood and one who has". We also believe that no Internet service provider, Internet hosting service, Web hosts or any other private, public or commercial service that provide data center space and/or connectivity to the Internet or to any local area network, should be able to legally host or provide any type of service to any individual, web site or organization that encourages sex crimes against children. This includes any web site, service or individual that portray children in a sexually suggestive manner.We demand that these web sites be made ILLEGAL in the UNITED KINGDOM and the global community.”

The Government strongly shares your concern about such websites, particularly those which make available indecent images of children on the Internet, and is determined to do all it can to curb this activity.
The law in this area is very clear. Under the Protection of Children Act 1978 (as amended), the UK has an absolute prohibition on the production, circulation and possession with a view to distribution of any indecent photograph of a child under 18. Section 160 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 also makes the simple possession of indecent images of children an offence.
The Sexual Offences Act 2003, which came into force in May 2004, created a specific set of offences to deal with the sexual exploitation of children, such as causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and meeting a child following sexual grooming. This has allowed the police to apprehend offenders who attempt to contact children through the Internet and other means in order to exploit and manipulate them, and ultimately to abuse them. In particular, the provisions in this Act have allowed police to apprehend offenders before they have a chance to engage in sexual activity with a child.
The Government supports the work of the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), http://www.iwf.org.uk/, which was set up in 1996 by ISPs to enable members of the public, via a hotline, to report child abuse content in a website hosted anywhere in the world. If the content is considered potentially illegal, the IWF passes details to the UK police to start action against the originators and asks ISPs to deny access to the websites concerned. If the originators are abroad, the IWF passes the report to the relevant national hotline and the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), which opened in April 2006, who in turn liaise with the enforcement agencies of the countries concerned. CEOP provides a single point of contact for the public, law enforcers, and the communications industry to report targeting of children online, and offers advice and information to parents and potential victims of abuse 24 hours a day. Based in London, it also carries out proactive investigations and works with police forces around the world to protect children. That focus has led to the safeguarding of 131 children and the arrest of 297 offenders last year. They have a full web presence at http://www.ceop.gov.uk/
The Government also supports the automatic blocking of sites which contain indecent images of children. Last year the Government asked all ISPs offering broadband internet connectivity to the UK general public to put into place technical measures that prevent their customers accessing websites containing illegal images of child sexual abuse as identified by the IWF.

Officers received several complaints from holidaymakers about a man they had seen behaving strangely near Praia da Luz, where the McCann family was staying.
The revelation will add weight to the theory that Madeleine was snatched to order by an international paedophile gang after being photographed by a "spotter".
In a separate twist, it has emerged that a British yachtsman told police he saw Madeleine on a Caribbean island in May.
Both developments are disclosed in newly released Portuguese police files. Last week it emerged British police were told Madeleine had been abducted three days after being photographed by a spotter.
According to the account in a Metropolitan police email sent to the Portuguese and Leicestershire forces, the picture was sent to a child abduction ring in Belgium, which had placed an order for a "young girl".
Having seen the image, the gang agreed that Madeleine should be taken. The files reveal that on May 9 last year – six days after Madeleine disappeared – officers interviewed Ernesto Mochacho, owner of a restaurant on Zavial beach, a 20-minute drive from Praia da Luz, which has a naturist area.
Mr Mochacho recalled seeing the McCanns with their three children for the last time at his restaurant in April.
His son, who also works at the restaurant, the only one on the beach, said he told police he had seen a "tall, thin Englishman in his forties" taking photographs.
"He was weird, a strange guy," Ivo Mochacho, 23, told The Sunday Telegraph. He said police visited the restaurant just after Madeleine vanished.
"Madeleine came here for lunch with her parents not long before she disappeared," he said. "I don't know if this guy took a picture of Madeleine. It's impossible to say. But he took a lot of photographs on the beach.
"The police said they had had complaints about a man acting strangely on the beaches. They thought he might have been a watcher, a voyeur. They told me to get in touch if I saw him again but I never saw him after that."
Mr Mochacho said members of the "Tapas Nine" – the group of friends dining with Kate and Gerry McCann on the night Madeleine went missing – were regulars at the restaurant, which has a terrace looking out across the Mediterranean. "They came a lot but I only saw the McCann family here once," he said.
The McCanns have long suspected that three-year-old Madeleine was abducted by a paedophile gang.
Last month police shelved their investigation and finally cleared the couple, both 40-year-old doctors from Rothley, Leicestershire, of involvement in Madeleine's disappearance.
Portuguese files also reveal Trevor Francis, a British yachtsman, told police he had seen Madeleine on the island of Margarita on May 16 this year.
Mr Francis, who is retired but owns a nursing home in Worthing, West Sussex, and captains a charter yacht, told police in a statement in June: "I saw the little blemish in her right eye. She really stood out. She was the absolute image
of the missing Madeleine."
Mr Francis said he was having lunch at a restaurant in the town of Porlamar on Margarita, which is part of Venezuela, when the girl arrived with three women who looked Spanish or South American.
He said: "I was afraid to do anything. I decided to get a good look to make sure it was her so I could report it."
The girl looked healthy, but seemed "sullen and refused to eat", he said. His report has been sent to the Portuguese and Venezuelan authorities.

Scotland Yard passed on a report from an informant who said a photograph of the child on holiday in Portugal was taken and passed to a "purchaser" in Belgium days before she vanished.
The information was contained in an email from the Metropolitan Police's CO14 clubs and vice intelligence unit included in a massive dossier of evidence made public this week.
Portuguese police pursued the lead with Interpol, which gathered further reports from Belgium, the UK, Finland and Germany.
Detective Paulo Rebelo, head of the Madeleine inquiry, ruled that all but the German intelligence showed "lack of credibility" and ordered that the Scotland Yard tip-off should be filed.
The Metropolitan Police email read: "Intelligence suggests that a paedophile ring in Belgium made an order for a young girl three days before Madeleine McCann was taken.
"Somebody connected to this group saw Maddie, took a photograph of her and sent it to Belgium.
"The purchaser agreed that the girl was suitable and Maddie was taken."
The source of the information was anonymous and it is unclear how reliable it is.
The files show the email was sent to Leicestershire Police on March 4 this year - but it was apparently not forwarded to Portuguese detectives until April 21.
A friend of Kate and Gerry McCann, both 40, from Rothley, Leicestershire, said the couple's private detectives were taking the possible involvement of Belgian paedophiles very seriously.
The McCann's family spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said: "The private investigators, as with all the other sightings and all the other information, will be pursuing this line as an absolute priority to establish if it has been fully investigated and properly ruled out.
"They have got some of the information already from their lawyers and investigators and they are waiting to hear from them what is legitimate, what is promising and what is not.
"They have learned an awful lot about this kind of thing, and God forbid she has fallen foul of any of these types."
This is not the first time Belgium has cropped up in the search for Madeleine - police investigated a sighting of a girl who looked like the missing child on the border with Holland last August.
Detectives carried out DNA tests on a bottle of milkshake that the child had been drinking from but the tests were inconclusive and the sighting was later discounted.

Now months ago I heard that someone had seen a man taking pictures on the beach of children the week Madeleine was there and the person thought it wrong and approached the man with the camera. This was the same beach that Madeleine visited everyday with her Mummy and Daddy and the holiday club she was with.
Another witness said there was a strange man on the beach in the rain that week and another had a man knocking on her door trying to sell her something who looked the same.
All this says to me that Madeleine was picked out and taken and would have gone at any time. She was targeted. I think that is what happens to these children who disappear.
Unfortunately, the people who have these children, these groups, usually have people in high status in them which protects them. This is why we can never get to the children.
Madeleine just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Others I have heard, have been snatched from super markets under their mothers noises and recently there were two reports of mothers coming into the room their child was in to find two women in the process of stealing the child. This is in their own home.
All this is going on and no one knew or wanted to know about it. It is something that sends chivers up and down the spine of us normal folk who love children and respect them and can not understand how anyone can even think of doing this to a little child, taking it away from its Mum and Dad and its life for money for that is what it is all down to. Money.

Dear All,
Missing children is a huge problem in our world today but its kept very much hush hush.
In the last year, I have found myself asking why and where? Why people consider abducting and where do they take them?
It is one big mystery and one huge problem. Can children just disappear of the face of the earth? Well no, they can’t. They are out there somewhere and there are people who know all about it.
I am not so worried about them, they have to stand before God one day but for the innocent children who have had their little lives ripped from them, taken from their homes, loved ones , toys , routine, safety, into a world of who knows what and who knows where there is something we can do together although all seems bleak and hopeless.
We can all pray. So I request for your prayers for missing children who are somewhere in this world. We do not need to know the ins and outs, just that they need our prayers.
I believe that God wants more of us to pray for these missing children. There are thousands of them Madeleine McCann being the most heard of and I believe God has used Madeleine to bring forward the terrible situation.
The Lord God Almighty allows certain bad things to happen but Good prevails. Out of bad comes good.
God always sees the bigger picture when we can only see a tiny part of it. I trust My God.
So Father God, I lift up Madeleine Beth McCann and all abducted children in this world being held against their will. I ask for a miracle to take place in their lives. I ask that as quickly as they were taken , you will move quickly to help them return to their loved ones. I ask for you to intervene in their lives and rescue them from their pain and suffering. Lord let them feel their families arms around them once more. Father I know you know all these children individually, you knew them from before they were in their mothers wombs. 1 When passing sentence, courts should have the power to prevent offenders contacting or living near their victims. The orders would be made on the basis of representations made by the victim.
1 The existing police vetting arrangements for people intending to work with children should be extended to cover all voluntary organisations. The government should make funds available to allow voluntary organisations to apply for the vetting information free of charge.

The pedophile activist movement, referred to by some supporters as the childlove movement, is a social movement that encompasses a wide variety of views. Generally the movement advocates social acceptance of adults' romantic or sexual attraction to children (see pedophilia); social acceptance of sexual activity between children and adults; and changes in institutions of concern to pedophiles, such as changing age of consent laws and mental illness classifications. Today, the movement is extremely controversial and has made little progress toward its goals in legal, scientific, or public arenas. Classification of pedophile activism as a valid political or civil rights activist movement is itself controversial.
Law enforcement officials and psychologists have asserted that the movement’s online support groups enable pedophiles to justify engaging in adult-child sexual contact. They claim that adults arrested for child molestation frequently cite the positions of the movement as justification for their actions. (Finkelhor, 1984) [2], [3], [4] [5] Psychologists consider some of the positions of the movement to be the "cognitive distortions" characteristic of sexual abusers. [6]
For example, in August 2006, The New York Times published the results of a four-month investigation of online pedophile communications and activities. [7] The newspaper described how "pedophiles view themselves as the vanguard of a nascent movement seeking legalization of child pornography and the loosening of age-of-consent laws." And while "pedophiles often maintain that the discussion sites are little more than support groups," the newspaper found that, "[r]epeatedly in these conversations, pedophiles said the discussions had helped them accept their attractions and had even allowed them to have sex with a child without guilt."
The movement’s members have vehemently opposed these characterizations. As described below, two debates surround the movement: whether there is such a thing as harmless child-adult sexual contact, and whether the advocating of such views spills over into encouraging such contact.

In 1989, sociologist Mary DeYoung reviewed the literature published by pedophile organizations for public dissemination. She found that pedophile organizations used the following strategies to promote goals of public acceptance of pedophilia:
Adoption of value-neutral terminology. According to Herdt, an anthropologist who has studied sex between adults and children in other cultures, pedophile advocates need to replace "dull and reductionistic" terms like pedophilia and abuse when discussing sex between "a person who has not achieved adulthood and one who has".
